LOVE WANTS US TO WIN

Book Cover

It’s the start of the hockey season in October 1992, and Georgina “Georgie” Law is preparing to spend all her free time at the Gardens, cheering on her beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. Georgie is a high school history teacher who inherited season tickets—and an all-consuming love for the team—from her late father. The Leafs, along with her tightknit group of fellow fans in her seating section, have been there for Georgie during the most difficult periods of her life, including the first years spent without her dad and the times when her struggle with migraine disease disrupted her routine. Lately, Georgie has been leaning on the team more than usual as she competes for a much-needed promotion at school. When a class visit to the ancient Egypt exhibit at the local museum ends in a migraine attack and a professional setback for Georgie, she reaches out to the handsome new curator, Oliver Jönsson, for help in designing a new history curriculum that will impress her students and the school principal. (“‘He asked questions and listened, wasn’t an egotistical know-it-all like some PhDs.’ While being so darn cute.”) Oliver is a Swedish-born Oxford graduate who’s found himself in Toronto on a one-year contract after the sudden death of his mother. His time in Canada was intended as a temporary arrangement, but it only takes one meeting with Georgie to make Oliver reconsider everything from his life back in London to his distaste for hockey, which reminds him of the hockey-player father who abandoned Oliver and his mother long ago. Filled with 1990s pop-culture references and a lovable supporting cast, Middleton’s novel is a low-stakes romance propelled more by the unpredictable rhythms of daily life (career shifts, health complications, and whether the home team wins or loses) than by friction between its two protagonists. The result is a sugary, nostalgic ode to a specific time and place that will carry extra significance for anyone who has truly loved a team.
